“Bell’s” was Bell’s Service Station, run by its longtime owner, the legendary Ed Bell, a dedicated supporter of local high schools. Bell’s was on the corner of 14th Avenue and 40th Street, for more than six decades.
Acquiring land surrounding the school has been part of the school’s long range strategic plan since 2013. A gift from the late Dick McCarthy, a longtime Rock Island attorney, helped the school purchase the land and demolish the site once home to Bell’s.
“The McCarthy trust gave us some flexibility to make the purchase. His generous gift was great timing and has provided us some great options for the future,” said Dave DeJaegher,
the longtime business manager for Alleman High School. “It was a great purchase for us.
“It helps so much just to have additional space,” DeJaegher said. “It’s really nice to have options now that we have that space. We’ll begin with adding parking and a sign to give is more visibility. It will enhance the look of the campus. As what to do down the road, we are always talking about what we can do to make things better for our students. I just think it’s neat to be able to look out and see the avenue or pass by and see the school without anything blocking it.”
Alleman principal David Hobin, says the McCarthy Trust has been a tremendous boost to the school.
“He had a vision to go with his amazing generosity,” Hobin said of McCarthy. “He had brick n mortar goal for us, and we now have that property and every classroom in the building has been updated. Our students have benefited greatly from his generosity.”
Hobin said the school’s independent fundraising effort to replace the Alleman’s athletic field is moving along. In dire need of an upgrade, the natural grass turf located behind the school is slated to be replaced with artificial field turf.
“Just a shade past the halfway point of our goal,”Hobin said of the campaign. ‘”It looks like Alumni Field can become a reality in 2019. We would liked to have had it for 2018,
but it looks like 2019 right now.”
