When Crocs attack, an ugly shoe taleWith a battle plan based on ‘thinking bigger than you are,’ the maker of the world’s ugliest shoe takes the footwear business by storm.

(Business 2.0 Magazine) By now, you’ve probably heard the unlikely story of Crocs not the rugged skinned reptiles but the equally strange looking shoes that have become a global phenomenon.

It’s quite a tale: Three pals from Boulder, Colo., go sailing in the Caribbean, where a foam clog one had bought in Canada inspires them to build a business around it. Despite a lack of VC funding and the derision of foot fashionistas, the multicolored Crocs with their Swiss cheese perforations, cushy orthotic beds, and odor preventing material become a global smash.

WISHFUL THINKING: Ron Snyder at first thought he’d work a few hours a day when he started working for Crocs. Then people started buying shoes.

Celebrities adopt them. Young people adore them. The company goes from $1 million in revenue in 2003 to a projected $322 million this year. Crocs Inc.’s IPO in February was the richest in footwear history, and the company has a market cap of more than $1 billion.

But there’s more than luck to Crocs’s astonishing success. Its founders and especially the CEO they brought in two years ago, former Flextronics executive Ron Snyder made some shrewd and instructive business moves that proved crucial.

A plan to take it easy

Crocs’s founders Lyndon “Duke” Hanson, Scott Seamans, and George Boedecker almost blundered into their success. (Boedecker resigned this year, three days before being arrested for threatening to slit his brother in law’s throat; a personal settlement was reached, and the charges were dismissed.)

They leased their first warehouse in Florida “specifically so we could work when we went on sailing trips there,” Hanson says. “From the get go, we mixed business with pleasure.” The shoes were first sold to sailing enthusiasts but soon gained a word of mouth following among doctors, gardeners, waiters, and other people who have to be on their feet all day.

In fact, it was Snyder who really lit Crocs’s fuse. He was kicking back after a four year stint running Flextronics’s global division, where he helped the giant contract manufacturer grow from $3 billion in annual sales to $16 billion. Then the Crocs founders,
ugg classic short sale Crocs shoes are ugly
old college friends of his, asked him to do some consulting for the fledgling company.

“I thought I’d work a few hours a day,” Snyder says. “I thought it would be restful.” Then he saw how fast sales were accelerating on mere word of mouth marketing and agreed to take on the CEO role. “Ron got us to start thinking big,” Hanson says. “He said, ‘You can be a worldwide force.'”

The accidental entrepreneur: a $10 Million Crocs tale

Snyder saw that Crocs were cheap enough $30 a pair that some customers bought multiple pairs for special occasions. “We’d get requests for red around Valentine’s Day and decided to make more red,” he says. “Then we decided to base our business model on this to deliver styles and colors customers want, and deliver them right away.”

An industry on its heels

Simple as it sounds, that turned the shoe industry’s distribution model on its head.

Usually retailers have to purchase their spring line of shoes, say, six months in advance and buy in bulk. With Crocs, they can reorder as few as 24 pairs and stock them on shelves in a matter of weeks. Best of all, they aren’t left with unsold shoes they have to discount so Crocs are always sold at a consistent price.

“They’ve surprised everybody,” says Jim Duffy of Thomas Weisel Partners. “Their replenishment system is unheard of in the retail footwear space.

It helped that in 2004, Snyder decided to buy Finproject NA the Canadian manufacturer that made Crocs and owned the formula for the special resin, called Croslite, that gives the soles their unusual comfort and their odor resistance. Until then Crocs had basically been ordering and distributing Fin’s product. Now it had control over manufacturing and timing.

Hanson calls it “the tail buying the dog”; Snyder declares it a “eureka” moment. “We had everything required to take the company to the next level,” he says. “Proprietary processes, proprietary material, intellectual property, and distribution.”

A one shoe company? Ask Al

The next level, of course, was nothing less than taking over the world. Snyder says the lesson he learned at Flextronics was “Think bigger than you are.” So he added manufacturing plants in China, Italy, Mexico,

and Romania.

Megan Leahy, a Chicago based podiatrist with the Illinois Bone and Joint Institute, told Huffington Post: ‘Unfortunately Crocs are not suitable for all day use.’

She added: ‘These shoes do not adequately secure the heel. When the heel is unstable, toes tend to grip which can lead to tendinitis, worsening of toe deformities, nail problems, corns and calluses.

‘The same thing can happen with flip flops or any backless shoes as the heel is not secured.’

While Dr. Alex Kor, the president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine told the site that they are the primary cause of arch or heel pain in his croc wearing patients, who come in with these complaints on a daily basis.

Certain people may benefit from wearing them, such as those who have a very high arch or suffer from excessive edema of their legs and ankle, says Kor.

In summation, Crocs are suitable for short intervals but should not be worn for long walks and ‘under no circumstances should they be worn for 8 10 hours a day.’

The news will come as a shock to the Croc believers.

One Amazon reviewer unwittingly commented: ‘I have so many problems with my feet, Crocs are like walking barefoot on a soft cushion. I love them.’

But a more clued up buyer wrote: ‘I use these for slippers in our Florida home. Walking the tile floors barefoot was killing my feet. These were recommended to me by my orotho doctor since I have a very high instep.

‘Very, very comfortable and ugly as hell. I still think it should be illegal to wear them in public.’

Medical misdemeanors aside, they have sold more than 300 million pairs in 90 countries and with retailing prices starting at $11.99, they won’t be going out of fashion any time soon.

A teacher wearing Ugg boots caused a head on collision when one of her shoes became trapped under a brake pedal.

Assistant headteacher Vera Baxter, 49, was unable to slow her VW Golf down because her footwear had become snagged on the pedal and she took evasive action to avoid hitting cars in front.

Off the road: English teacher Miss Baxter was banned from driving and fined 350 after pleading guilty to dangerous driving at Manchester Crown Court (pictured)

‘Basically I just yanked the boot out

forcibly with both hands because I thought the car was going to

explode. I pulled it out and the edge of the wool ripped. I threw myself

out of the car, crawling to the middle of the road.

‘I had the boots

for a year and they were my first pair of Ugg boots. Its a freak risk

but I keep a pair of trainers in the car now.’

Judge Martin Steiger QC told Baxter that she bore responsibility for the October 30 smash last year because the risk posed by driving in the boots was entirely foreseeable.

Judge Steiger said: ‘It was the defendants choice of footwear that made her unable to control the vehicle when the crisis arose.’

Test Text1 italics T Time now for the big board. Right here feeling chipper this Monday morning. I don’t know why. What’s going on with me on a Monday. Let’s do this. You hang on. Want to start with Becky Worley. You have news breaking from Facebook. Taking on Ebay and craigslist with marketplace? Facebook telling ABC news starting today users will be able to buy and sell from each other within the Facebook app. You’ll see a shop icon. You see items listed in your area. Or across the world. This bites into all kinds of commerce giants. Businesses. One thing Facebook won’t be doing. Handling the payment side of transactions. They’ll leave to it folks using the service to decide on. You can use paypal. Even this other amazing payment mode, cash or check. I remember that, Becky. You know with any kind of website like this where buying and sell ring involved, there’s concern about fraud. What is Facebook doing about that? Because you can check someone’s profile, it gives you real world context on the person. You can feel safe, or not, about making a purchase. They say you can file a complaint if you gate fake or it’s not as described. If they see a pattern, that seller can be banned from the marketplace. I don’t know. Would you feel more comfortable buying from a friend of a friend on Facebook or someone on Ebay with a five star gold rating? That’s a good question. People will scratch their heads over it. Every time I pay with cash these days, people are like, what’s that about? Now to a new battle over high school dances. “The Wall Street journal” highlighting schools that are banning them because of concerns about underage drinking and drug use. A lot of pint P opportunities and parents don’t like this. That’s what we’re talking about here. A school outside of Boston said it’s not worth the headache. Kids are showing up falling all over the dance floor. Throwing up. Liability, too. They’re saying, what’s the point? Even though underage drinking has gone down, binge drinking is more common. Kids don’t dance as often. Back in the day,

we had prom. They have the spring fling, the fall dance, the senior, junior, sophomore dance. The school is taking matters into its own hands. But people are saying it’s up to the parents first. You talked about liability. Suppose some kid god forbid gets drunk at the school, hurts himself, somebody else, the the school could be liable. People are look at this like you’re throwing out the baby with the bath water. You have a couple of bad ams. Overwhelmingly, the kids are good. You have responsibility at home that they’re not showing up drunk. Let’s lathsen it up. A little more “Saturday night live.” You saw Alec Baldwin and Kate Mckinnon taking on that debate. My microphone is broken. She broke it. With Obama. She and owe what stole my microphone. They took it to Kenya and they broke it. And now it’s broken. Not a response more a request, can America vote right now? Let’s talk to Chris Connelly right now. Big hit for “Snl” biggest premier ratings in eight years. What did you think? Alec is one of the two most talented noncast members in the history of “Snl.” Along with Steve martin. He had the non the nation. The look. The lines. You could say it was broad. But that was part of the job description. He was there to set up Kate Mckinnon’s amazingly nuanced take of Hillary. Giving us the out are Hillary and the inner Hillary at the same time. The initial performance. Strong. We haven’t had this reaction since Tina fey with Sarah Palin. And Sarah Palin’s Numbers dropped after what Tina fey did. I think about 16% in 2008. What kind of impact do you anticipate? Will there be in? There will be none. Parody and satire are fainting dead away in the face of reality. There’s no way you can satirize or parody what has gone on. You just lit Chris up with that question. How often have we been saying, this is like an “Snl” skit? What we’re seeing happening on the trail. It’s amazing to witness. You saw last in that debate sketch. They made a joke on Hillary with the miss universe thing. They had her call miss universe a prop. That was a wink of the show. Saying the job that used the be done by comedy to get torpid skin of candidates is now being done by the candidates themselves. That’s one of the way this is is different than anything we have seen before. A parody proof election. Chris, thank you. Becky. And the emotional good bye from a sports legend, vin

ugg australia knightsbridge CPSC Issues Warning After Reports Some Samsung Washing Machines Exploded

Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued a warning about certain top loading Samsung washing machines after reports that some exploded, ABC News has learned exclusively.

The agency said it is working with Samsung on a remedy to fix the issue, which apparently affects some units made from March 2011 to April 2016.

“It was the loudest sound. It sounded like a bomb went off in my ear,” Thaxton said. “There were wires, nuts, the cover actually was laying on the floor.”

Thaxton says what made it even more frightening was that her then 4 year old son, Luke, was right next to her.

“I just remember covering my head and leaning towards my son and just screaming this scream that I didn’t even know I could scream,” she said.

In a similar case in Holly Springs, North Carolina, Sarah Price said her two month old top loading Samsung washing machine flew apart too.

“Any one of us could’ve been in here,” she said.

“GMA” Investigates has learned that since early last year, 21 people have reported to the CPSC that their top loading Samsung washing machines have exploded or blown apart.

Thaxton and several other plaintiffs are suing Samsung in federal court in New Jersey. Their lawyer,
ugg boots cleaning kit CPSC Issues Warning After Reports Some Samsung Washing Machines Exploded
Jason Lichtman, argues that a support rod in the top loading Samsung washing machine is insufficient to hold the tub in place and can become unfastened during the spin cycle.

“The rod can slide right out,” he said. “And that’s what causes the washing machine to blow apart.”

In a statement late yesterday Samsung told “GMA” Investigates, “In rare cases, affected units may experience abnormal vibrations that could pose a risk of personal injury or property damage when washing bedding, bulky or water resistant items. It is important to note that Samsung customers have completed hundreds of millions of loads without incident since 2011.”

Until a remedy to this safety issue is in place, the CPSC and Samsung today are advising consumers to use only the delicate cycle when washing bedding and bulky items. They say the lower speed lessens the risk of impact injuries or property damage from the washing machine’s becoming dislodged. Consumers can contact Samsung to get more information and determine whether they have an affected washing machine.

Thaxton said that Samsung offered her a refund but that she’s taking the company to court instead because she wants to warn other people about the problem.

“If that would have hit my child, there is no telling it would have been catastrophic,” she said. “And that’s why I’m speaking out.”

The men and women working at CBP in western New York have plenty of experience to be able to identify fake merchandise. They’re specially trained to find fraud.

“We’ve seen skin products, like a Clarisonic facial scrub. We’ve seen curling irons. You name it, we’ve seen it,” Draganac said.

HSI says counterfeiting is a big concern at the border. “This is a global problem and it affects the global economy. They look good, but they don’t feel real when you pick them up; in addition, “the beats” barely beat. They don’t have the quality sound the real product is known for.

Officers have seized numerous purses made to look like designer handbags. “The craftsmanship is very poor on them,” Draganac observed.

Agents also showed News 4 cellphone covers that can cause your phone to overheat potentially burning your skin.

Counterfeit cologne could be trouble, too. “You don’t know what’s in it; what chemicals are in it. If you sprayed that stuff on your skin right now, you’d probably get a pretty bad rash,” Draganac said.

A bogus bottle of Biolage shampoo could cause injuries. “That started by somebody from the community returning it to a store, and it happened to have glass in it,” he added.

Agents found fake Viagra for sale by the pill at gas stations in WNY. “Some of the drugs may have the active ingredient it’s supposed to, but it may be too much. In one particular case, that Viagra had very small amounts of the active ingredient,” SAC Spero noted.

Officers at the bridges have even seized toothpaste that contained antifreeze. “So it’s very dangerous, very deadly,” Draganc warned.

CBP allowed News 4 inside its inspection area for trucks. Some shipments are randomly inspected. Others items are targeted for inspection.

“Mainly what they’re looking for is things out of the ordinary; specific routing issues, high risk shipments, things that were counterfeited in the past,” Draganac said.

Officers open boxes, check craftsmanship and even look at labels. Officers need positive proof the goods are real. Officials told News 4 that many seized products comes through South East Asia. WNY is a unique area due to having many transit points; some shipments will try to disguise the point of origin of the product.

CBP works with HSI to target the major smugglers.

Seized items are held while smugglers are prosecuted. “Eventually, after the investigation, if it’s determined to be counterfeit, it will be destroyed. We’ll send it to a contractor and have it officially destroyed,” Draganac confirmed.

Some items are burned. CBP sometimes donates counterfeit clothes to third world countries.
